TAGORE SOCIETY FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT
Tagore Society for Rural Development (TSRD) is one of the oldest and largest civil society organizations in the eastern India engaged in rural development since 1969. TSRD was founded by the Sri Jayprakash Narayan (JP) and freedom fighter Sri Pannalal Dasgupta imbibing the philosophy of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. TSRD is working in more than 2801 villages spread over 47 blocks of two states viz. West Bengal and Jharkhand under the name and style of Rangabelia Project, Sagar Project, Bolpur Project, Tapan Project, Rajnagar-Khoirasol Project, Hingalgunj Project, Patamda Project and Maheshpur Project.
The organization’s human resource strength including professionals in different streams is about 250. Our partners include the Governments of India, Government of Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal, the Irish Embassy, ICCO (The Netherlands), Bread For the World (Germany), E.E.D. Germany, The Fellisimo Forest foundation (Japan), UNDP, UNICEF, Packard Foundation (USA) etc. Currently, our Secretary is Shri Billwagopal Chatterjee is currently the secretary of TSRD and Chairman, Sri Tushar kanjilal, a Padma Shree and a winner of the National Teachers Award and Jamnalal Bajaj Award.
In Jharkhand, TSRD works through Patamda project and Maheshpur project in the districts of East Singhbhum, Pakur and Dumka.
The Patamda Project unit was established in 1980. The operation area of Patamda project covers Patamda and Dhalbhumgarh blocks of East Singhbhum district, Nimdih block of Saraikela-Kharsawn district of Jharkhand and Manbazar-I & Barrabazar block of Purulia district of West Bengal. At present total 1,25,000 population in 275 villages are covered by the Patamda project out of which 4,000 families in Patamda block are directly involved in agriculture program. 50 experienced staff members are working with the Patamda project to run the project activities. Thematic areas of Patamda Project include community organization, institution building – SHG, tribal development, women empowerment, promotion of agriculture and horticulture.
Maheshpur Project unit was established in 1979. The operational area of Maheshpur project covers Maheshpur, Pakur, Hiranpur, Pakuria and Litipara blocks of Pakur district and Ranishwar block of Dumka district. It covers a population of 1.32,275. Thematic areas include SHG formation and strengthening, micro savings, education, environment, childline centre, economic development, health & sanitation and capacity building.
