MAHILA MANDAL

Mahila Mandal  works in rural areas of Chatra district of Jharkhand. Women are in the forefront of Mahila Mandal’s activities. Mahila Mandal visualises an equal and just society where women have equal participation in decision making in all aspects of life and the dalit, adivasi and other backward classes are self-dependent. All its actions are towards that end.

MAHILA MANDAL evolved out of the work PRADAN had done in two Gram Panchayats of Ithkori block of Chatra district. Ms. Meera Singh, who had organized women into self-help groups (SHGs) as part of the PRADAN project founded MAHILA MANDAL (literally meaning “women’s group”) as an independent organisation which continued to nurture the SHGs when PRADAN withdrew in 1997 on completion of their project commitment. Soon MAHILA MANDAL got registered as a formal organization under the Indian Trust Act. MAHILA MANDAL formed more SHGs subsequently through a NABARD supported project and the number of SHGs went up to 250.

A major activity of MAHILA MANDAL is to boost the entrepreneurship skills of SHG members and help them in market linkage for selling their products. Typical activities include goat farming, poultry, dairy and vegetables. With technical support from Vikas Bazar Net MAHILA MANDAL has introduced various new techniques of farming in the local area like System of Rice Intensification, System of Wheat Intensification and improved vegetable cultivation. MAHILA MANDAL has also worked for education of girl children.
