AGRAGATI
A strong believer and practitioner of people’s participatory processes, Agragati, a charitable society, was founded on 23rd January 1978 at Amta of West Bengal. Agragati has aimed at achieving sustainable development through empowering and capacity building of the rural poor and toiling masses, particularly the schedule caste, the tribal and the women.
Agragati Jharkhand, a unit of Agragati, came into existence in the year 1996. As its first intervention in Jharkhand Agragati started implementing different rural development programmes through people‘s participatory processes in 12 villages of Karma gram panchayat of Mandu block, Ramgarh district through the project titled “Upliftment of the Rural Poor” under the able supervision of SPAR, the mother organization. Eighty SHGs, 12 village organizations and 1 central committee were formed to steer the development programmes. Effortful and sincere approach of Agragati made it acceptable to people throughout its working area. It got early recognition from the villagers, government and other non- government organizations. Owing to its recognition as one of the NGOs working with commitment at grassroot level, and further organizational development as a result of capacitation and organization development inputs received from SPAR, it became easier for AGRAGATI to implement/ facilitate certain other projects and expand its area of intervention.
In the year 2000, Agragati facilitated school feeding programme (distribution of nutritious foods) of CRS Kolkata. In 2001 it undertook Facilitation of RCH (reproductive child Health) programme under KGVK as a field origination. 2003 remained another important year in the life of Agragati Jharkhand, when it got an opportunity of implementing PACS Project in 10 villages of Mandu Block. In the same year it undertook an assessment of various aspects of drought prone areas of Jharkhand with support from ICCO the Netherlands and got involved in ARSH (Adolescents Reproductive Sexual Health ) project in 20 villages of Patratu and Mandu blocks supported by KGVK. Gradually Agragati started partnering with various organizations and expanded its operational area to 8 blocks of Hazaribag and 2 blocks of Giridih all blocks of west singhbhum district. It has partnered with National Jute Board (Government of India), Development Commissioner Handicrafts (Government of India), TRIFED, NABARD, Drinking Water and Sanitation Mission (Government of Jharkhand), Biodiversity Board of Jharkhand, Jharkhand Education Project, social welfare, welfare and tourism departments of the Government of Jharkhand, District Fisheries Office Hazaribag and the District Rural Development Agencies of the concerned districts.
